What a lovely little cafe . We were greeted by a nice lady who told us to take a seat and she would come and take our order - she cleared a very sunny table, my husband had the local fish special , myself the cod goujons and salad - very promptly served and very nice. We were very impressed with the visitor centre adjoining with binoculars to use and activities for children all FOC . The sunny October day made all this even better , so rounded off with a quick climb over a small bridge over the Chesil bank and saw the glistening sea .
Always friendly service

I like to visit here with my grandchildren because the food is really excellent with both adult and children’s menus. The service has always been really helpful and friendly and I would have to say that this is one of my favourite places to eat. Take binoculars if you are a birdwatchers as there are usually geese and waders to be seen. Great place.

"Big windows over looking the Fleet lagoon. Freshly cooked food and very good service. You can eat outside if you have a dog and weather permitting."
Best crab sandwich ever!

"Once again, after a long walk in hot weather we stopped here for a drink and a sandwich. The café was immaculately clean and the staff friendly and helpful. Crab sandwiches were not shown on the menu but there was no problem to order one and when it came - well! It was so full of crab (50% each brown and white meat) that it was almost falling out of the bread! The salad garnish was just right - not too much but fresh and attractive. Washed down with a glass of chilled Sauvignon whilst overlooking Chesil Beach, we soon forgot our hot feet! Well worth waiting for."
What a wonderful place!

"We happened on this eatery by accident not being locals. How lucky were we! Lovely attentive staff in full Smiley mode. Choices were made clear to our grandchildren and us. Fantastic service. Boys were allowed to read the books in the cafe whilst waiting. The catering staff must be very organised in such a busy cafe as the food came out quickly and very hot which was nice. All meals consumed to great delight by all. Wonderful establishment with amazing staff and with lovely views of Chesil beach. 10/10!"

"The cafe itself is a bit basic and was crowded on the day we were there. However we had the roasted vegetables with butternut squash hummus in wholemeal pitta bread which was excellend."
Lovely setting and views.

"A little expensive but lovely quality and tasty food, with a reasonable choice.
Would stop again... bread and butter pudding, clotted cream and strawberries"
So fresh and tasty...

"Taste Cafe lures one back again and again because it is so good in every way. The food is always fresh and appealing. The fish platter is one of my favorite dishes and tastes great when accompanied by a cold glass of wine. The staff are always welcoming and friendly and seem to take pride in their food. The view makes it particularly pleasant and it can take a long time to eat food when one is constantly drawn to a wonderful view. The close proximity of ample disabled places in the car park makes it ideal for an "easy" visit."
Best Crab sandwich

Bank Holiday Treat
Posted on Trip Advisor on 30th April 2017
"Visiting family in Weymouth over the bank holiday weekend, we decided to breakfast at the "Taste Cafe at Chesil beach".What a great decision that turned out to be. We were welcomed with a lovely cheerful smile from the young lady behind the counter who explained that they were temporaraly short handed but assured us the situation was in hand.I chose the full english breakfast with black pudding and hash browns as extra. We didn't have to wait long at all and everything on the plate was cooked to perfection with REAL mushrooms, proper butchers sausage, lovely thick rashers and free range eggs with rich yellow yolks.Excellent food and service and I recommend this cafe to anyone visiting the Portland area."

"a very good café within the Chesil Beach Visitor Centre. There was with a good selection of food and drinks served by very helpful friendly staff. Prices were very reasonable. Plenty of parking space in the adjoining Council pay and display car park."

"Quality service and an exceptional breakfast. Plenty of choice on the menu, well priced and really good for kids. Within the visitor centre of Chesil Beach so lots for children to see and do. Well worth a visit"

"Reasonable coffee, overpriced pretentious biscuits, cakes and local ales. Great educational part for kids, clean, calm atmosphere, friendly staff. Loads of parking and easy walk over the mounds of shingle to the sea. Five circles!"

"This is a quality venue with excellent light lunches, coffees, cakes and drinks. Excellent views across The Fleet. Shares the building with DWTs Natural History Centre. Their special gourmet nights are excellent usually with a seafood emphasis. Altogether a great place to be and good for families. The kids have a great time with the special interpretation facilities too."

"Saw the cafe on way to Ope cove, as we couldn't find Hayloft cafe - supposed to be next to castle? So as we had to pass this on way home stopped here for lunch. Lovely friendly waitress. Fodd, fresh and tasty, but not able to adapt/ change fillings to sandwiches, coz waitress explained it was prepared off site. Didn't feel rushed. List of produce suppliers, nice it was mainly local. Gift shop interesting, but a little expensive Car park needs a lot of work filling in pot holes before summer season starts!!

"taste* is our favourite local place to eat. The menu is creative, especially the vegetarian options, and the fresh food, beautifully presented and delicous. But I think what I like best is that the staff have obviosuly been trained - so they greet you on arrival, bring menus promptly, give you time to decide but don't keep you waiting. Not once has anyone said "Are yet oright there?" Pet hate of mine! When people leave the tables are cleared and cleaned immediately, and the chairs and condiments tidied. There are fresh flowers on the tables too. This visit I had the taste* platter - a tapas like selection, every bit of which was scrummy. My husband had the fish platter, which he throughly enjoyed."
Another great surprise on my doorstep

"We have been twice to this restaurant. We had an outstanding lunch in February. We went there because we had the "winter blues" and thought that we needed to have our spirits lifted with a brisk walk and some lunch.
The parking was easy and convenient, the welcome was warm. It is a "beach café" and is linked to a visitor centre and shop but it was a nice atmosphere and nice and warm on a cold winters day. The menu was interesting, tempting and different. My wife had an excellent steak and mushroom pie, she is not normally a pie fan but she loved every mouthful. I had mussels, delicous and plenty of them. Both had chips to die for. A goof choice of wine and beer and a wonderful sweet. The bill was equally acceptable, not exspensive for such good fare. Whilst we were there we noticed they had a "Fish and Chip Special" evening coming up so we booked for that as well.
We took 3 friends, none knew that the café existed and were pleasantly surprised. We had a "fab" supper, everything was perfect, the food was probably the best fish and chips that I have ever had and our guests thought the same. The service was outstanding and the price was also a pleasant surprise.
We will be visiting again soon. If you love the sea and like to watch birds whilst enjoying your food this is an ideal place with wonderful vistas of "The Fleet" and Portland Harbour.
Things continue to improve in the area, what a choice we have now. Another great Birthday visit to Zizzi's in Dorchester as well last Sunday. It's just a great place, so child and adult friendly too."
Come and see...!!
Posted on Trip Advisor on 8th March 2015
"We came to the Chesil Beach Centre yesterday primarily to buy a pair of binoculars, but the high point was without doubt - the lunch. We both had paninis with cranberry, brie and bacon, served with a mixed leaf salad and a small basket of fries. Delicous!
Normally, that would be enough, but the chocolate gateau and treacle tart, for my son, was just too tempting to resist, so followed by a superb café ended our meal. It is a little pricey, but worth every penny as the café is spotless, the staff friendly and professional and the food...fabulous.
Come and see for yourself and enjoy the views of Chesil Beach"

"Café is on Chesil beach so good place for a walk on the beach. Good food and coffee with nice views. Interesting exhibition on birds and information about the beach"

"Food was absolutely scrumptious and the staff all are friendly, helpful and smile (a rare commodity these days).
The prices are a bit above my pay grade so it is usually a treat when we visit."
Great menu, great view

"Had lunch with girls here today. Lovely friendly staff, daily specials and tables with great views of the Fleet. I had the fish platter, which was top quality and a generous portion. My friends both ate melts, which they throughly enjoyed too. I brought home a flyer for taste* tapas evenings which sound fabulous. Can't wait to make more friends here for simple but fabulous lunch."
Lovely meal, and position

"We stopped here for lunch, and coffee, and although it was raining, the staff were welcoming, food was good and the view was outside to the lake was really interesting. We saw different wading birds, and geese, all in all was very good. Will certainly recommend this to friends and family, and we will visit again."
Lovely breakfast cooked 'as you like it'

"Really nice wholesome breakfast, cooked as requested, to order. No trouble to 'personalise' it to individual taste."
A very lovely bite to eat'
Posted on Trip Advisor on 25th October 2014
"Today I popped in with my 10 month old son, on my way back to Portland after a busy morning, (I don't live on Portland anymore, but was visiting family)
I had a caramel crunch cappuccino, parsnip soup with a cheese scone and a piece of chocolate mocha cake.
The cappuccino was the tastiest one I have ever had and the presentation was really pretty - I think that presentation is as important as the taste of food and drink.
The parsnip soup was seasoned just right, and left room for me to season accordingly. The cheese scone was fresh and warm and most importantly to me, the pat of butter was soft enough that it could be spread onto the scone with ease.
The mocha cake wasn't too sweet and wasn't too big a piece that I felt I couldn't finish it.
The service was great and I liked the fact that I wasn't asked if I was enjoying my meal whilst I was eating. I'm not a fan of being asked if the food is nice or if I need anything else, whilst trying to swallow a mouthful of food.
taste* is a credit to Weymouth & Portland and I hope that the standard continues to 'wow' me!!"
